People with developmental disabilities, homeless people with mental illnesses, and homeless people with HIV/AIDS are some of the most vulnerable groups in society and must be protected at all costs. At Unique People Services, we are committed to offering affordable permanent supportive housing for these vulnerable groups. We do not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation, race, gender, religion.
We provide support to residents every step of the way, helping them navigate life’s challenges. Our supportive housing programs are designed to create structure in residents’ lives. The food we eat affects our physical and mental health. We realize the importance of good nutrition and offer nutritional counseling and freshly cooked meals to residents.
We strive to create a supportive environment in all our homes. Our teams conduct house meetings regularly. The purpose of a house meeting is to communicate our expectations to the house residents and receive feedback from them. House meetings also provide opportunities for residents to interact with each other. During house meetings, residents are encouraged to share their life stories, so they can learn from each other’s experiences.
Our team consists of highly compassionate professionals. In every transactional house, a house nurse ensures that residents take their medicines on time and follow their doctor’s instructions. They have an amazing ability to walk in someone else’s shoes to understand their situation. Our professionals never judge residents and try to be more empathetic everyday. They are adept communicators and take the time to truly listen to house residents.
When a person with a troubled past has too much time on their hands, they may feel bored and go down the wrong path. Some people may dwell on the past and may feel stuck in a negative thought spiral. We conduct events (such as parties and celebrations) at regular events to keep house residents engaged. Constructive distraction helps prevent self-destructive thoughts and behaviors.
We help house residents rebuild their lives. On request, we can refer house residents to specialists (for better physical and mental care). Our team helps house residents grappling with substance use disorders get the professional help they need.
Our team communicates house rules clearly to house residents and takes steps to enforce them. People battling with addiction are required to undergo drug tests regularly (drug tests help ensure adherence to house rules). House residents are expected to perform chores such as washing their clothes and cleaning their rooms. They are required to maintain good personal hygiene and treat others with respect.
